Job Description

The London Borough of Waltham Forest is seeking a Payments Officer to join its Direct Payments Team within Adult Services, based at Waltham Forest Town Hall, Walthamstow (E17 4JF). This is a temporary role paying £121.36–£159.59 per day via Prism, starting 3 August 2026.

This post sits at the heart of the Direct Payments service, helping individuals exercise genuine choice, control and independence over their social care funding. You will provide advice and guidance to Direct Payments recipients, carry out financial monitoring and auditing of client accounts, support recovery of unused funds, and ensure compliance with the Care Act 2014 and relevant Direct Payments legislation.

Key responsibilities include: advising service users on Direct Payments in a clear, customer-focused way; working collaboratively with Adult Social Care teams and external agencies; monitoring expenditure robustly; supporting KPI delivery and quality assurance; identifying safeguarding or risk concerns and escalating appropriately; and contributing to process improvement across the team.

The ideal candidate will have strong IT skills (particularly Microsoft Office), excellent communication and relationship-building abilities, proven experience in customer-focused financial or administrative environments, and a solid understanding of social care legislation including the Care Act 2014. Previous experience administering Direct Payments or working in a financial administrative context is desirable. A degree or equivalent vocational qualification and evidence of CPD are expected.
