Job Description

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist to join its Social Care Occupational Therapy service in Birkenhead. This is a community-based role working at Grade PO6, available from 12 October 2026, paying £31.02–£40.00 per hour.

Reporting to the Occupational Therapy Team Leader, the post holder will undertake specialist functional assessments under the Care Act, promoting independence, managing risk, and preventing deterioration for adults with complex, progressive, and multifaceted conditions. You will work alongside social care and health colleagues to deliver seamless, person-centred outcomes, arranging specialist equipment and major adaptations including Disabled Facilities Grant works.

Key responsibilities include autonomous specialist assessments (seating, moving and handling, major adaptations), clinical supervision and mentoring of junior staff and students, safeguarding duties, and contribution to multi-agency and integrated team working across the borough. The role involves hybrid and flexible working, with travel across Wirral and occasional evenings or weekends as service needs require.

Applicants must hold a degree in Occupational Therapy and be registered with the HCPC, with evidence of continuing professional development. Substantial post-qualifying experience in a statutory social care or community OT setting is essential. Knowledge of the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Disabled Facilities Grant legislation, and manual handling practice is required.
