Job Description

Somerset Council is seeking a qualified Adults Social Worker to join its Adult Services team based in Shepton Mallet, Somerset. This is a locum position paying £38.00 per hour (umbrella, non-negotiable), with a start date of 31 August 2026.

You will hold a caseload of varying complexity, undertaking assessments of risk and care needs, formulating care plans, and working in partnership with health, housing, voluntary, and statutory agencies. Responsibilities include ongoing assessment of allocated cases, statutory reviews, carers’ assessments, Court of Protection applications where individuals lack capacity, and effective crisis management. The role involves regular multi-disciplinary working, including with hospital health colleagues, and occasional supervisory responsibility for unqualified staff or students.

Essential requirements: recognised Social Work qualification (BA or MA in Social Work or equivalent); current registration with Social Work England; experience in adult social care within a multi-disciplinary setting; IT literacy; fluent English. A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential. Experience with Learning Disabilities is desirable.
