Job Description
Newport City Council is seeking a Business Support Officer to provide clerical and administrative support within its crematorium service, based at Telford Street, Newport (NP19 0ES). Starting 5 June 2026, the role pays £13.26–£17.10 per hour via Prism.
You will be the first point of contact for bereaved families, funeral directors, officiants, and suppliers — communicating in person, by telephone, and in writing. Day-to-day duties include carrying out a range of administrative tasks associated with cremations, receiving payments for crematorium services, issuing receipts, and maintaining financial records in line with the Council’s regulations. You will also assist the team leader in building and sustaining effective relationships with the crematorium’s partners.
The essential requirements are a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades A–C) or NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent experience), at least two years’ experience of dealing directly with customers and partners, strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to plan and organise workloads, competence with Windows-based software, and a sympathetic and understanding attitude towards the bereaved. Working towards the ICCM Crematorium Certificate is desirable, as is Welsh language ability.
If you have relevant administrative experience and the empathy to support people at a difficult time, please get in touch.
