Job Description

Birmingham Children’s Trust is seeking an experienced, qualified Social Worker to join its Child Protection Inquiry Team in Aston, Birmingham on an initial 3-month agency contract (£21.04–£28.55 per hour; £33.30 per hour for senior staff), with potential for extension. Start date 27 July 2026.

This is a fast-paced, short-term service responsible for completing Section 47 enquiries and, where appropriate, 15-day Section 17 assessments. The team does not hold long-term cases — once enquiries and assessments are complete, cases transfer to the relevant longer-term teams. Social workers also participate in a duty rota every four weeks, during which new safeguarding referrals are allocated. Caseloads are intentionally kept low, typically three to four children at any one time, enabling practitioners to focus on timely, high-quality assessments.

Ideal candidates will be Social Work England registered with proven experience in safeguarding or assessment services, confidence completing Section 47 enquiries, and the ability to work independently under competing priorities. Access to a car is desirable, as the role involves statutory home visits across Birmingham. Strong references are required.

The team is based at One Avenue Road, Aston, with free on-site parking, hybrid working (minimum two office days per week), a structured induction, and access to a wide range of CPD and training opportunities.
