Job Description

Herefordshire Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Social Work Manager to join the Assessment and Support service, South Locality, based in Ross-on-Wye. This is a 3-month agency contract at £41.42 per hour (umbrella), 37 hours per week, starting 10 August 2026.

The Assessment and Support service operates across three locality offices — South (Ross-on-Wye), North (Leominster), and Central (Hereford). Each team runs a rotating duty element, completing robust short-term assessments of need and ensuring the right services are in place for children and families. You will lead a team comprising a Managing Practitioner and five Social Workers, providing clear leadership, supervising casework, allocating and prioritising workloads, and driving performance to ensure the child’s welfare remains paramount.

Herefordshire is proud of its restorative approach to social work, with collaboration and reflective practice embedded in its culture. Senior managers are accessible and supportive, particularly on complex cases.

You will hold a full social work qualification (DipSW, CQSW, CSS or equivalent) with a minimum of three years’ statutory social care experience. Strong assessment, report-writing, and complex-case-management skills are essential. Supervisory or management experience — or a background as a Senior or Advanced Practitioner — is expected.
