Job Description

Barnet Council is seeking an experienced Senior Social Worker or Advanced Practitioner to join their Intervention & Planning Team, based in Colindale, London (NW9 4EW). This is a temporary locum role offering £27.32–£37.54 per hour via Prism, with a start date of 25 August 2026.

Working within a Resilience framework, you will deliver a comprehensive statutory children’s social work service, responding to complex and high-risk situations in a timely, purposeful manner. You will hold your own complex caseload whilst supporting, supervising, and mentoring less experienced social workers and NQSWs through their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).

Key responsibilities include: conducting complex child and family assessments; developing and reviewing safeguarding and permanence plans; presenting evidence to courts and multi-agency forums; maintaining case records and chronologies on appropriate systems; and deputising for the line manager when required. You will demonstrate expert risk management and sound judgement across multi-agency, contested, and high-complexity cases.

Candidates must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England (or HCPC). Substantial post-qualifying experience in a statutory children’s social work setting is essential. A Practice Educator Award is desirable; if not held, it is expected to be achieved within the first year. Competency in the Knowledge and Skills Statements for Child and Family Social Workers, including the Achieving Permanence statement, is required.
