Job Description

Barnet Council is seeking an experienced Senior Social Worker or Advanced Practitioner to join its Intervention & Planning Team, based in Colindale, NW9. This is a demanding and rewarding role for a skilled children’s social worker ready to practise at a higher level within a Resilience framework.

You will hold a complex caseload involving multi-agency input, serious risk factors, and intricate family dynamics, whilst also deputising for the line manager when required and providing direct oversight, support, and mentoring to less experienced social workers and NQSWs. You will conduct high-quality assessments, produce concise analytical reports, present at court, and ensure all statutory responsibilities — visits, reviews, care planning, and timescales — are met to a consistently high standard.

The role carries a lead responsibility in a specialist area as directed by departmental policy, and post holders are expected to be active participants in Workforce Development, including acting as Practice Educators and assessors for trainee Practice Educators. Competency across the Knowledge and Skills Statements for Child and Family social workers, including Achieving Permanence, is required.

The successful candidate will hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England (or HCPC). Substantial post-qualifying experience in a statutory children’s social care setting is essential. A Practice Educators Award is desirable; if not held, achievement within the first year is expected.
