Job Description
Birmingham Children’s Trust is seeking an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to champion the rights, wishes and wellbeing of children and young people in care. This is a remote-working role paying £27.89–£37.99 per hour, starting 27 July 2026.
As IRO, you will chair statutory Child in Care Reviews, provide independent oversight and constructive challenge across care planning arrangements, and ensure that Birmingham Children’s Trust meets its statutory and corporate parenting responsibilities. You will be a credible, independent champion for children and young people — ensuring their views and lived experiences directly influence decision-making and that permanence planning is progressed without drift or delay.
Key responsibilities include chairing complex multi-agency review meetings; monitoring care plans for compliance and progress; identifying and escalating concerns through dispute resolution and statutory challenge processes; contributing to quality assurance, auditing and thematic reviews; and maintaining accurate statutory records on electronic case management systems.
Essential requirements: Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England; significant post-qualifying experience in children’s social care; strong knowledge of legislation and statutory guidance relating to children in care; proven ability to chair complex meetings, influence practice and provide constructive professional challenge.
If you are a passionate, experienced social work professional committed to achieving positive outcomes for children in care, we would love to hear from you. Apply now or contact us to find out more.
