Job Description

Barnet Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Advanced Practitioner (or Senior Social Worker) to join its Intervention & Planning Team, based in Colindale, NW9. This is a temporary locum role paying £27.32–£37.54 per hour via Prism, with a start date of 21 July 2026.

Working within a Resilience framework, you will deliver a comprehensive, integrated children’s social work service, managing complex cases at a higher level of autonomy and deputising for the line manager when required. You will carry your own complex caseload whilst providing supervision, mentoring, and oversight to less experienced social workers and NQSWs during their ASYE.

Key responsibilities include undertaking high-level safeguarding and permanence assessments; managing multi-agency working across complex family situations involving significant risk; preparing and presenting detailed written and verbal reports for courts, reviews, and professionals’ meetings; and ensuring all statutory obligations and performance timescales are met.

Candidates must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England (or HCPC). Substantial post-qualifying experience in a statutory children’s social care setting is essential. A Practice Educators Award is desirable; if not held, candidates will be expected to achieve it within their first year. Competency across the Knowledge and Skills Statements for Child and Family Social Workers, including Achieving Permanence, is required.
