Job Description

Somerset Council is seeking an experienced SEND Assessment & Review Officer to join their Children’s Services team on a remote interim basis, paying £205.58–£280.00 per day from 15 June 2026.

This role sits at the heart of SEND dispute resolution, coordinating responses to tribunal appeals and supporting mediation between families and the local authority. You will prepare legal documentation, gather evidence, and represent the council at SEND tribunal hearings, while also arranging and facilitating mediation meetings aimed at resolving disagreements before they reach formal proceedings.

Key responsibilities include ensuring full compliance with the SEND Code of Practice, tribunal procedures, and statutory timelines; liaising sensitively with parents, carers, legal representatives, schools, and internal teams; and providing expert advice to colleagues on tribunal and mediation processes to support consistent, lawful decision-making. Accurate case recording, outcome reporting, and contributing to service improvement are also central to the post.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong working knowledge of SEND legislation and tribunal procedures, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a proven ability to manage complex, sensitive cases with professionalism. Skilled negotiation, conflict resolution, and advocacy abilities are essential, as is the capacity to work under pressure with close attention to detail.
