Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Team Manager to join Wirral Council’s Children’s Care Services, based in Birkenhead. This is a senior leadership role at the heart of children’s social work, directly shaping outcomes for children, young people, and their families across the borough.
You will lead and manage a team of six to eight practitioners, ensuring high-quality, effective, and consistent social work practice. Day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing referral and allocation processes, maintaining manageable caseloads, conducting reflective supervision, and driving rigorous case auditing to scrutinise and improve practice standards. You will champion the voice of the child in all social work interventions and hold practitioners to account where performance falls short, whilst providing the support and guidance needed for professional growth.
You will work collaboratively with partner agencies and professionals to deliver joined-up services, contribute to strategic planning at service level, and support Service Managers on specific projects. Budget management and financial oversight form part of the role, alongside mentoring and coaching both newly appointed and aspiring Team Managers.
Candidates must hold a recognised Social Work qualification (Degree in Social Work or Dip SW), be registered with Social Work England, and demonstrate significant experience of managing teams within statutory children’s services. You will have a strong track record in managing complex cases carrying risk of harm, robust knowledge of relevant children’s legislation, and the ability to lead a culture of learning and continuous improvement. A management qualification at ILM Level 5 or equivalent is desirable.
The rate for this role is £45.00–£58.24 per hour, with a start date of 18 May 2026. Apply now to make a genuine difference to children and families in Wirral.
