Support Assistant – Libraries – #OR100177

April 21, 2026
£17 - £17 / hour

Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Library Service for the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil as a Library Support Assistant, working across Aberfan, Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, and Treharris Libraries, as well as the Homelinks Service.

In this varied and customer-facing role, you will assist Principal and Operational Librarians in delivering a consistently high standard of library provision, contributing towards the Welsh Public Library Standards and the Council’s broader strategic objectives.

Key responsibilities include staffing issue and enquiry desks, answering and redirecting user enquiries, maintaining shelving sequences, supporting stock control and stock editing, and managing reserve collections. You will facilitate and attend events at library buildings — including preparing spaces, providing refreshments, and opening and closing premises — as well as assisting ICT users in both group and individual settings. The role also involves data input, maintaining accurate and confidential user records, processing cash and card payments, and making deliveries to special needs recipients and other sites as required.

The post involves physical demands including bending, lifting, and carrying stock, and working within older buildings that may require stair use.

Candidates must hold a minimum of 3 GCSEs (including English Language), a BTEC equivalent, or be able to demonstrate suitable experience. An ECDL or demonstrated IT competency and a clean current driving licence are essential. A Welsh language qualification (Level 2–5) is desirable, as is previous customer service experience.

If you are a methodical, flexible team player with strong communication skills and a commitment to excellent public service, we would love to hear from you. Apply today to make a real difference to your local community.
