Support and Engagement Worker – Substance Use Service – #5300819

Job Description

Middlesbrough Borough Council is seeking an experienced Support and Engagement Worker to join its substance use service, based at the Live Well Centre, Middlesbrough (TS1 2PA). This is a temporary role paying £34.73 per hour, starting 19 July 2026.

Working with adults who have substance use issues, you will also support clients presenting with co-occurring needs including housing instability, mental ill health, physical health conditions, and offending behaviour. Using a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach, you will reduce barriers to treatment and promote meaningful engagement for some of the most marginalised individuals in the community.

The role is community-facing and flexible by design. You will work across a wide range of settings — including prisons, courts, partner agencies, and community locations — as well as undertaking proactive street outreach, home visits, and scheduled appointments. You will work as part of a dedicated multi-agency team, demonstrating strong collaboration skills and a commitment to achieving tangible recovery outcomes.

This is an unqualified social care post; a Social Work England qualification is not required. Relevant experience working with substance misuse, complex needs, or chaotic lifestyles is essential, along with the resilience and communication skills to build relationships with clients who may present with challenging behaviour.
