Streetworks Inspector – Highways & Street Works – #OR103209
Job Description
Somerset Council is seeking a Streetworks Inspector to join their Highways team on a temporary basis, based in Taunton (TA1 4DY) at a rate of £14.82–£19.89 per hour, starting 22 June 2026.
In this field-based role you will inspect live street works and completed reinstatements across Somerset, ensuring compliance with NRSWA, permit conditions, SROH, and the Safety at Street Works & Road Works Code of Practice. Working largely unsupervised, you will cover a high volume of sites daily across the county, recording outcomes via handheld devices and systems including Confirm and Street Manager.
Key responsibilities include: inspecting live sites and completed reinstatements; identifying defective works and issuing remedial instructions; checking diversion routes and temporary traffic management for signage compliance; carrying out post-closure inspections; supporting coordinators and statutory undertakers with site-based advice; engaging professionally with the public and partners; and providing evidence for enforcement processes including s.74 overrunning-works cases.
The ideal candidate will ideally hold a Street Works Supervisor qualification, possess strong geographic knowledge of Somerset, and be confident dealing with live on-site situations and engaging directly with statutory undertakers and members of the public.
