Job Description

Barnsley Children’s Social Care is seeking two experienced Senior Social Workers to join its Duty and Assessment Service on an interim basis, running until September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity to make a tangible difference to the lives of children and families in Barnsley.

Based at Wombwell Police Station, you will be co-located with police colleagues as part of one of four Assessment Teams. The teams operate a rolling rota — one week on duty managing allocations, followed by three weeks completing timely, high-quality assessments with children and families within 40 working days. Working collaboratively with families, you will determine the right intervention and agree plans that either close cases to Children’s Social Care, transfer to long-term teams, or step down to Early Help services.

You will be a passionate, driven practitioner who understands what good practice looks like, is confident working within a performance management framework, and can work at pace to ensure timely decision-making. You will bring experience of child and family assessment, an ability to balance need and risk, and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for children in Barnsley.

Hybrid working is in place, with a minimum of three days per week in the office, rising to five days during duty weeks. The role is full-time and is offered at £35 per hour.
