Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to join Stockton-on-Tees Children’s Social Care. This is a pivotal role in safeguarding the welfare of looked-after children, ensuring that care plans are fit for purpose, regularly reviewed, and genuinely child-centred.

As an IRO, you will chair looked-after children reviews, scrutinise and quality-assure care planning, and act as an independent advocate for children in the care system. You will hold local authority professionals to account, challenge poor practice, and escalate concerns where necessary to protect children’s best interests.

The service is open to applicants who may not have held an IRO post previously, provided they can demonstrate the skills, values, and professional judgement required to fulfil the role effectively. This is a genuine opportunity for an experienced qualified social worker with a strong children’s background to step into an IRO position.

Candidates must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England. Experience in children’s services — particularly looked-after children, child protection, or permanence — is essential. An ability to chair meetings with confidence and engage constructively with multi-agency professionals is key.

The role is based in Stockton-on-Tees (TS17 6BJ) and is offered at £34.45 per hour. The position commences 11 May 2026 on an ongoing basis.
