About the Role
We are currently seeking a highly experienced SEN Tribunal Officer to support a Local Authority in managing and resolving complex Special Educational Needs (SEN) cases. The role involves leading on SEND Tribunal appeals and representing the Local Authority at hearings, as well as promoting early resolution through expert negotiation and mediation.
You’ll act as a key contact for legal and statutory matters relating to EHCP disputes, while also supporting the SEN team to improve practice and reduce the risk of appeals, complaints, or judicial reviews.
Key Responsibilities

Represent the Local Authority at SENDIST hearings and defend service provision

Lead on the resolution of complex SEN cases, promoting early intervention and mediation

Provide expert guidance to SEN Officers and senior leaders regarding Tribunal processes

Work directly with families, schools, and legal representatives to resolve disputes

Support the improvement of team practice and contribute to reducing risk of appeals

Chair and attend resolution meetings, using tact, empathy and negotiation

Ensure accurate case management and records using internal systems
Essential Requirements

In-depth knowledge of current SEND legislation and Tribunal processes

Proven experience managing complex SEND casework, including appeals

Skilled in conflict resolution and multi-agency working

Confident in handling emotionally sensitive cases and working with families

Strong ICT skills and ability to manage high caseloads

Relevant professional qualifications or equivalent experience
Desirable
-
Background in Education, Social Care or Health
-
Knowledge of related legal frameworks (e.g., Children Act, safeguarding)

Experience using the Capita system
