Job Description

Wakefield Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Senior Social Worker to join the Complex Care Needs Team in Normanton, West Yorkshire (WF6). This is a maternity cover post running from June 2026 to February 2027, paying £35 per hour.

The team is a specialist service supporting children and young people aged 0–18 with complex health needs and disabilities. You will manage a varied caseload of approximately 20–25 cases, spanning Child in Need (CIN), Child Protection (CP), and Children in Care (CIC), while working closely alongside the Short Breaks Team.

The service operates on a hybrid basis, with around two office-based duty days per week and flexibility for home-based administrative work. Full-time candidates are preferred, though condensed hours may be considered. Availability on Fridays is a core requirement.

The team currently has six practitioners and is undergoing a structural refresh as part of wider social care reforms. Support includes ongoing management guidance, specialist training in disability-focused practice, and a relationship-based approach — providing a more planned, less reactive environment than typical frontline locality teams.

Experience with children with disabilities is advantageous but not essential. The key requirements are strong statutory social work skills, an understanding of additional needs, and a genuine commitment to working with children, young people, and their families. Social Work England registration is required.
