Job Description

Kirklees Council is seeking an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer to join its Child Protection and Review Unit (CPRU) in Huddersfield on a temporary basis covering maternity leave for up to 9 months (June 2026 – February 2027). The rate is £31.20 per hour.

As IRO, you will hold a caseload of Looked After Children, chairing statutory reviews and other relevant meetings to ensure plans are meaningful, child-centred, and compliant with national guidance, legislation, and Kirklees practice standards. You will provide independent oversight of each child’s case, separate from the managing team, and contribute to quality assurance across the service. The team follows a restorative practice approach, working collaboratively with families, social care teams, and partner agencies.

Essential requirements include a recognised Social Work qualification and current Social Work England registration, significant post-qualifying experience in statutory childcare work (including direct child protection experience), and a thorough understanding of the legal framework relating to looked-after children and safeguarding. Experience of providing professional supervision, strong chairing skills, and the ability to analyse complex cases are also required.

The role involves hybrid working – a combination of home working, office-based work at the Silver Court site in Huddersfield, visits to children in foster and residential placements, and chairing meetings at various locations. An enhanced DBS and barred list check is required. Travel across and sometimes outside the Kirklees area is expected.
