Job Description

Somerset Council is seeking a qualified and experienced Child Protection Conference Chair for a role based in Taunton (TA1 4DY). This is a senior, Grade 8 position offering £31.70–£44.00 per hour via the Prism portal, available from 13 July 2026.

The successful candidate will act as an Independent Safeguarding and Reviewing Officer (ISRO), chairing Child Protection Conferences and Looked After Children reviews, providing effective challenge and scrutiny to ensure that plans for children are both safe and effective. You will hold statutory reviewing responsibilities under the IRO Handbook 2012 and Working Together 2013.

Key responsibilities include: chairing complex multi-agency meetings (including PLO, Care Diversion, and Complex Safety meetings); providing formal reflective supervision and casework consultation to operational social work staff; leading case file audits and driving good practice improvements; engaging meaningfully with children, young people, and families to ensure their participation in planning; and building strong relationships with partner agencies including health, education, CAFCASS, and the police.

You will maintain oversight of the most complex cases, produce high-quality, evidenced records, and escalate concerns through appropriate channels. Where required, the postholder may also fulfil LADO functions.

Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England. Substantial post-qualifying experience in a children’s services setting, particularly in child protection and/or IRO/ISRO functions, is essential.
