Job Description
Wigan Council is seeking a Childrens Advanced Practitioner to join their fast-paced Duty Service, operating across five duty teams as part of the Greater Manchester Collaboration. This is a locum role paying £40 per hour, running from 27 July to 2 October 2026, based at College Avenue, Wigan (WN1 1NJ).
As an Advanced Practitioner you will provide mentoring, coaching, and practice expertise to less experienced colleagues, holding a small but complex caseload and co-working cases to support social worker development. You will lead and embed the Family Safeguarding model across children and family work, ensuring child-centred, statutory-compliant practice at all times. Duty rotation is one week in every five across teams each comprising a Team Manager, Advanced Practitioner, Senior Social Worker, and six Social Workers.
Key responsibilities include undertaking assessments, direct work with children and families, reflective supervision, learning circles, case audits, and quality assurance activity. You will work alongside Team Managers to uphold practice standards, embed motivational interviewing, and drive evidence-based improvement informed by SCRs and current research.
Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England. Significant post-qualifying children’s services experience and demonstrable leadership at Advanced Practitioner level are essential. REED compliance is required for this XMS-sourced role. To apply, please get in touch promptly — the start date is 27 July 2026.
