Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Advanced Practitioner to join Somerset Council’s Adult Social Care directorate, based at Musgrove Park, Taunton. This is a senior-level post offering the chance to make a genuine difference to vulnerable adults across Somerset, working within a values-driven, progressive local authority.

Reporting to the Service Manager, you will provide professional leadership and high-quality social work practice across a defined neighbourhood or locality, with oversight of complex casework and line management of up to seven qualified social workers. The role spans a broad range of service areas including Neighbourhoods, Intermediate Care, Mental Health Social Care, Community Learning Disabilities, Hospital Interface, Safeguarding, and Preparing for Adulthood.

Key responsibilities include supervising and appraising qualified social workers, leading on safeguarding adults, supporting Court of Protection applications, undertaking complex assessments and reviews under the Care Act 2014, managing personal budgets, and contributing to audits and quality assurance. You will coach and mentor the team, drive evidence-based practice, and work collaboratively with health and community partners to support timely hospital discharge and independence.

Candidates must hold a recognised Social Work qualification and be currently registered with Social Work England. You will bring extensive experience in adults’ social care, strong knowledge of relevant legislation, and a proven track record in supervision and complex case management. A Post Qualifying Professional Standard (or working towards one) is desirable. This is a hybrid role with four days per week in the office.
