*Childrens Social Worker Assessment and Intervention #OR100724

April 27, 2026
£30 - £39 / hour

Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Advanced Practitioner to join Wirral Council’s Children’s Care Services, based in Birkenhead. This is a pivotal senior role at the heart of practice quality and child safeguarding, offering the chance to make a genuine difference to outcomes for children and families across Wirral.

You will work across assessment, Child in Need, Child Protection, pre-proceedings and court work, providing expert case direction, risk management and decision-making support to social workers. You will step in on complex cases where needed, bring confidence in PLO and court proceedings, and ensure that statutory duties and timescales are met consistently. Chairing high-complexity meetings, quality assuring court documentation, and presenting evidence-based statements to Court will all form part of your remit.

Equally important is your role as a practice leader. You will coach and mentor social workers, support reflective practice, and foster a learning culture that builds confidence and skills across the team. You will line manage five to seven staff, contributing to supervision, appraisal, and professional development, and may act as Practice Educator for students and NQSWs completing their ASYE.

Candidates must hold a recognised Social Work qualification (Degree, DipSW or equivalent) and be registered with Social Work England. Post-qualification statutory experience in a children’s services setting is essential, as is proven experience of safeguarding investigations, risk assessment, and court work.

This role is offered on a locum basis at £30.38–£39.18 per hour, with a start date of 18 May 2026. If you are a calm, child-focused practitioner who thrives on supporting others and driving practice improvement, we would love to hear from you. Apply now.
