Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Supervising Social Worker to join the Fostering Team at Gateshead Council, working from the Civic Centre in NE8.

This is a pivotal role within the placements service, supporting the identification and matching of children and young people to appropriate foster carers. You will work collaboratively alongside a duty worker and placements officer to ensure that looked-after children are matched with the most suitable carers, helping to achieve stability and positive outcomes for some of the most vulnerable young people in the region.

Key responsibilities include supervising foster carers, supporting the placements team in identifying suitable matches for children and young people, contributing to placement decisions, and maintaining accurate case records in line with statutory requirements and Gateshead Council’s policies.

Candidates must hold a recognised Social Work qualification (degree, DipSW, CQSW or equivalent) and be registered with Social Work England. Previous experience within a fostering team or looked-after children service is highly desirable. A sound understanding of placement matching, fostering regulations, and the needs of children in care is essential.

This role is offered on a locum basis at a rate of £34.45 per hour, with a start date of 27th April 2026. The position is based on-site at Gateshead Council Civic Centre.
