Job Description

An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an experienced Team Manager to join Wirral Council’s Children’s Care Services, based in Birkenhead. This is a pivotal leadership role carrying a rate of £45.00–£58.24 per hour, available from 18 May 2026.

You will lead and manage a team of 6–8 practitioners, driving high-quality, effective, and consistent social work practice to achieve the best possible outcomes for children, young people, and their families. You will oversee referral and allocation processes, manage workloads within agreed guidelines, and scrutinise practice through case audit, supervision, and direct observation.

Key responsibilities include delivering reflective and accountable supervision, championing the voice of the child, building collaborative multiagency partnerships, managing budgets efficiently, and contributing to service planning at a strategic level. You will mentor newly appointed Team Managers and support the professional development of all practitioners within your team.

Candidates must hold a social work qualification (Degree in Social Work or Dip SW), be registered with Social Work England, and be able to evidence continued professional development. Extensive experience of managing a team within statutory children’s social care is essential, as is significant experience of complex casework carrying risk of harm, performance management, and multiagency working. An ILM Level 5 management qualification is desirable.

This role requires the ability to travel within and outside the borough and to work outside office hours when necessary.
