The following is essential criteria:

– Degree in Social Work

– SWE Registration

– Right to work within the UK

Approved Mental Health Practitioner

  1. To respond to emergency referrals which arise out of office hours

  2. To undertake duties in the role of Approved Mental Health professional in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983.

  3. The post will lead on carrying out our statutory duties under the Care Act 2014 in relation to assessing the needs of adults and their carers, and developing support plans.

  4. To assess wellbeing and needs with an emphasis on early intervention and prevention with adults and their carers who contact the out of hours service. To engage the adult and carer in understanding their needs and the strengths and assets they have to meet them.

  5. To conduct assessments on vulnerable adults and provide a service when it is indicated that without the provision of a service, they would suffer significant harm or hardship.

  6. Take appropriate action to the significance of risk, consistent with protection procedures e.g. applying child or adult protection procedures.

  7. To interview the service user in an appropriate manner as defined by legislation, to undertake a full risk assessment which will inform the decision-making process for an application for detention. Coordinate the service user’s assessment process which necessitates liaison   with other professional bodies Eg the police ambulance services or court to obtain warrants for entering premises this may even be out of hours.

  8. To identify and consult with the nearest relative of the service user, as defined by legislation. Advise the service user of his/ her legal right of appeal, and the right of the nearest relative to request the discharge of the service user.

  9. To attend on occasion at the Custody Suite to act as an “Appropriate adult” or to do assessments of vulnerable adults under either care act or MHA

  10. To engage in regular supervision and to develop an annual training plan based on individual need.                                                                                                      

  11. Attend team meetings and training events during normal office hours as required from time to time this may also include covering in the absence of the team manager to represent the local authority.

  12. To attend to requests for advice, support, assistance or provide a service when it is clear that a failure to respond would lead to a serious breakdown in family relationships.

  13. To provide or set up emergency or temporary residential/supported placement.

  14. To refer to all matters to the relevant team or service on the next working day, using the agreed appropriate pro forma and to provide a face-to-face handover to and from the daytime AMHP service following the full nights.

  15. To provide written reports on matters dealt with as part of your work and handover and to complete monitoring information on the agreed platform

  16. To maintain a recording system based on paper records and the LAS system.

  17. Make appropriate referrals to other agencies.

  18. Contribute to the evaluation and development of services and new ideas by sharing knowledge about their skills and practise with other social services staff professional groups and interested bodies to also pay attention to the national AMHP service.

  19. To attend and contribute to the AMHP and mental health law forums

  20. Promote and maintain confidentiality.

  • A professional qualification in social work

  • Social Work England registration.

  • Post qualified experience.

  • Enhanced DBS/Update service.

  • References required for the last 5 years of employment.
