Job Description
Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Team Manager to lead a frontline children’s social work team in Birkenhead. This is a demanding and rewarding role at the heart of children’s services, where your leadership will directly shape outcomes for children and families across assessment, Child in Need, Child Protection, pre-proceedings, and care proceedings.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a team of six to eight social workers, maintaining quality of practice and performance, ensuring children are seen, risks are addressed, and casework progresses within timescales. You will provide regular, reflective supervision, hold practitioners to account, and actively support professional development — including mentoring newly appointed or aspiring Team Managers.
You will work closely with Service Managers and partner agencies, champion good recording and timely visits, and ensure the voice of the child remains central to all decision-making. Oversight of PLO, court proceedings, CP plans, and CIN work will form a significant part of your remit.
Candidates must hold a social work qualification (Degree or DipSW), be registered with Social Work England, and have extensive experience managing a statutory children’s social work team, including complex cases carrying risk of harm. An ILM Level 5 or equivalent management qualification is desirable.
Rate: £34.86–£45.00 per hour. Location: 2 Alice Square, Birkenhead, CH41 2YA. Start: 10 August 2026. Sourced via Prism.
