Childrens Social Worker – Family Safeguarding South Somerset – #OR110219

July 29, 2026
£28 - £38 / hour

Job Description

Somerset Council is on an ambitious journey to transform how it supports children and families through its Families First Partnership programme — reshaping services so families receive the right help at the right time, in partnership with social care, education, Police, health and communities.

Two six-month bespoke Social Worker posts are available within the Family Safeguarding South Somerset team, based in Yeovil. The focus is Child in Need work, intervening intensively with families at an earlier stage to prevent unnecessary escalation. You will work with children and families already subject to Child in Need plans, ensuring they receive the help they need using a strengths-based, relationship-based approach.

Somerset has successfully embedded the Family Safeguarding model. Working alongside adult-focused practitioners, you will access specialist advice in substance misuse, domestic abuse and mental health, and draw on child exploitation expertise from the CE (WAVE) team. Manageable caseloads allow you to be creative — hearing children’s voices and supporting direct work with the whole family network.

You will be supported by permanent Team Managers, Consultant Social Workers and an established senior leadership team, with regular reflective supervision. The team is based in Yeovil and you will be expected in the office three days per week. A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential — this is a rural area.

Requirements: qualified social worker registered with Social Work England for at least three years, with experience in children and families social work. Rate: £28.41–£38.00 per hour. Start date: 24 August 2026.

If you are passionate about relationship-based practice and want to make a real difference in South Somerset, apply now.
