Job Description

Wigan Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Social Worker to join its busy Duty Service, operating across five duty teams supported by a Duty Academy. This is a fast-paced, assessment-focused role offering variety and professional challenge within a well-structured rota system.

You will rotate onto duty one week in every five, working alongside a Team Manager, Advanced Practitioner, and Senior Social Worker. The Duty teams hold cases of varying complexity, with case transfer points including the Initial Child Protection Case Conference, the first CLA review, the first PLO meeting, and the third CIN meeting. Cases are not held long-term; following assessment and intervention, families are stepped across to the most appropriate team.

Key responsibilities include expert assessment and intervention, risk analysis, and creative problem-solving in response to complex and fast-moving situations. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to empower children, young people, and families to achieve sustainable solutions are essential.

Candidates must have five years of verifiable references with employment gaps accounted for, and relevant qualifications as per the job description. Suppliers must complete the DfE Recommendation Compliance Questions and attach the completed file to the candidate record prior to submission — applications without this will not be progressed.
