Job Description
Somerset Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Social Worker to cover a rare vacant position within a settled Children Looked After (CLA) team based in Shepton Mallet, Mendip. This is a locum role paying £28.41–£38.00 per hour, available from 24 August 2026.
The team works with children and young people aged 0–18, including Somerset’s dedicated caseload of Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC). Although the base office is Shepton Mallet, children may be living anywhere in the country, so significant travel is expected — a full driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential.
Key responsibilities include carrying out high-quality, child-centred assessments; completing statutory visits; producing care and pathway plans; contributing to TAC and PEP meetings; and preparing court reports, later life letters, and life story books. You will hold a mixed caseload of children aged 0–18 with varying levels of complexity, using strengths-based and trauma-informed practice throughout.
Candidates must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England. Experience in a children’s multi-disciplinary setting, strong partnership-working skills, and excellent recording and communication abilities are required.
Locum workers have access to CPD training and innovative AI tools including Beam Notes. If you are ready to join a friendly, supportive team making a real difference for children in Somerset, please apply today.
