Childrens Social Worker – Child and Family Assessment Team – #OR112558

August 19, 2026
£177 - £239 / day

Job Description

Thurrock Council is seeking a qualified Social Worker to join the Child and Family Assessment Team in Grays, Essex, supporting children and families during periods of crisis to manage risk and promote child wellbeing.

Working as part of a duty team, you will respond to referrals risk-assessed by the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub, completing initial visits — including joint visits with police — and implementing safety plans as required. You will manage caseloads of children and unborn subjects to Child and Family Assessments, making threshold decisions informed by the Thurrock Threshold Document, and completing short-term interventions to ensure families access appropriate support services.

Key responsibilities include undertaking Child Protection Enquiries under Section 47 of the Children Act 1989, preparing and presenting Child Protection Conference Reports, and undertaking direct work with children and adults to understand their views and effect change. You will provide evidence-based analysis of significant harm to inform court decisions in public and private law proceedings, and chair multi-agency Child in Need and Core Group meetings, creating and reviewing SMART plans. Oversight of cases in court proceedings and children looked after is also required.

Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England. This is a competitive day-rate contract (£177.48–£238.54 per day) based in Grays, RM17, commencing 31 August 2026. Apply now to be considered.
