The residential care worker will play a vital role in supporting children and young people living in residential settings such as children’s homes. Core Duties of a Residential Care Worker:
1. Safeguarding and Protecting Children
o Ensure the safety and welfare of all children and young people.
o Recognise and report signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
o Follow safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.
2. Providing Direct Care and Support
o Assist with daily routines such as waking, dressing, meals, and bedtime.
o Provide emotional support and build trusting, therapeutic relationships.
o Encourage children’s independence and self-care skills.
3. Promoting Positive Behaviour
o Support young people in managing their behaviour using positive reinforcement.
o De-escalate challenging situations calmly and professionally.
o Follow individual behaviour management plans where applicable.
4. Planning and Participating in Activities
o Organise and engage in recreational, educational, and social activities.
o Encourage children to develop hobbies and interests.
o Promote inclusion and community participation.
5. Supporting Education and Development
o Assist with homework and liaise with schools or education providers.
o Monitor and support individual learning and development goals.
o Promote a culture of aspiration and achievement.
6. Record Keeping and Communication
o Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of incidents, observations, and care plans.
o Contribute to reviews and care planning meetings.
o Communicate effectively with colleagues, families, and professionals.
7. Health and Well-being
o Support access to medical care and administer medication if trained to do so.
o Promote healthy eating, physical activity, and good hygiene.
o Monitor emotional and mental health and seek support where needed.
8. Working as Part of a Team
o Participate in team meetings and handovers.
o Follow the home’s policies and procedures.
o Support colleagues and contribute to a positive team culture.
9. Professional Development
o Undertake regular training and reflective supervision.
