Job Description

Somerset Council is seeking a qualified Adults Social Worker to join their Learning Disabilities team, based at The Crescent, Taunton (TA1 4DY). This is a locum opportunity paying £27.78–£38.00 per hour, starting 3 August 2026.

You will hold a caseload of varying complexity, undertaking assessments of risk and care needs, formulating and reviewing care plans, and working in partnership with health, housing, voluntary agencies, and other statutory bodies to deliver person-centred outcomes for adults with learning disabilities.

Key responsibilities include: conducting ongoing needs and risk assessments; engaging with individuals presenting in crisis; statutory reviews; carer assessments; preparing reports for decision-making; and contributing to multi-agency and joint-working arrangements. You may also supervise unqualified staff or students and act as appropriate adult in complex cases.

Essential requirements: a recognised Social Work qualification (BA or MA in Social Work or equivalent); current registration with Social Work England; demonstrable experience within adult social care; and access to a vehicle. Experience working with adults with learning disabilities is highly desirable, as is supervisory experience.
