About the Role
We’re working in partnership with Trafford Council to recruit an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer / Child Protection Chair to join their dedicated Safeguarding & Review Service. This is a key role in driving forward the council’s commitment to high-quality practice and better outcomes for children and young people.
As an IRO/CP Chair, you’ll take the lead in chairing Initial and Review Child Protection Conferences and Cared for Children Reviews, ensuring that children looked after by the local authority have their care plans regularly reviewed with their voice at the centre.
Key Responsibilities

Chair Child Protection Conferences and Looked After Children Reviews

Act as a Practice Leader, providing support, challenge, and direction to multi-agency partners

Promote and uphold high standards of safeguarding practice

Ensure services reduce risk, support families where safe to do so, and deliver quality outcomes for children

Raise concerns through informal challenge and dispute resolution processes when needed

Champion continuous improvement, share good practice, and drive performance standards
Essential Requirements

Social Work qualification and Social Work England registration

Minimum 5 years’ experience in Children’s Services, with at least 2 years at Level 3

Strong background in safeguarding and looked after children

Proven ability to manage risk and work collaboratively with partners

Knowledge of strength-based relational practice and quality assurance frameworks

Experience in leadership, performance oversight, and using solution-focused approaches
