About the role

We are seeking a compassionate, motivated and experienced Housing Support Officer to help vulnerable adults maintain their tenancies, live safely and achieve greater independence.

You will work across supported housing properties in Wigan, Rochdale and Accrington, providing face-to-face support alongside practical housing management. You will build relationships with residents, identify their needs and work with specialist agencies to ensure they receive appropriate support.

This role suits someone who is organised, confident working independently and able to balance resident support with the responsibilities of keeping accommodation safe and well managed.

Key responsibilities

Tenancy and resident support

  • Complete housing-related needs assessments with prospective residents, referral agencies, families and other professionals.

  • Carry out accompanied property viewings and risk assessments to establish whether accommodation meets residents’ needs.

  • Coordinate move-ins for approved referrals and explain tenancy or licence agreements, resident handbooks, support arrangements and house rules in an accessible way.

  • Support residents with benefit applications, council tax assistance and other tenancy-related paperwork within relevant timescales.

  • Provide regular face-to-face tenancy support and keep residents’ needs and risk assessments under review.

  • Signpost residents to appropriate services, including mental health, drug and alcohol, debt advice and community support.

  • Organise house meetings and group support sessions to encourage positive relationships and shared living.

  • Advocate for residents and attend relevant meetings or court hearings where required.

  • Coordinate referrals for aids and adaptations, working with occupational therapists and seeking landlord approval where necessary.

Housing management and property safety

  • Carry out regular property visits and weekly room checks, identifying concerns relating to cleanliness, damage or deteriorating living conditions.

  • Complete and record scheduled security, health and safety checks, reporting concerns in the required format.

  • Monitor fire drills and alarm checks, ensuring records are accurate and any evacuation concerns are highlighted.

  • Ensure communal and external areas remain clean, clear and free from hazards.

  • Respond to tenancy breaches and antisocial behaviour, issuing notices or warnings in accordance with organisational procedures.

  • Help resolve household and neighbour disputes through clear communication, de-escalation and partnership working.

Safeguarding and partnership working

  • Identify safeguarding concerns and make prompt referrals to the relevant local authority in line with procedures.

  • Work collaboratively with NHS services, Adult Social Care, probation, police and other specialist agencies.

  • Liaise with on-site security and local enforcement teams where appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate, timely case notes, risk assessments and property records.

  • Follow organisational policies and procedures and maintain a professional, respectful approach with residents and partner agencies.

Skills and experience

Alongside the essential requirements above, you will need:

  • Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.

  • A compassionate, person-centred approach to supporting vulnerable adults.

  • Confidence explaining information clearly and adapting your communication to individual needs.

  • Competence using IT systems for record-keeping and communication.

  • Flexibility to meet the needs of residents and the service.

  • A clear commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable adults.

  • Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
