Job Description
Somerset Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Social Worker to join the Sedgemoor Assessment Team in Bridgwater, covering maternity leave on a locum basis at up to £38.00 per hour (via Prism), starting 28 September 2026.
This is a Child and Family Assessment role within a well-established, predominantly permanent team. You will complete Child and Family Assessments with newly referred families, working with them until they are either stepped down to alternative services or transferred to the Safeguarding teams. Sedgemoor Assessment operates as two closely aligned teams, jointly covering duty work, responding to urgent situations, and sharing practice expertise.
Somerset promotes manageable caseloads, enabling relationship-based, creative direct work with children and young people. You will engage parents and the wider family network, with access to Family Group Conferencing. Skilled Team Managers provide regular, reflective individual and group supervision. The service has received a positive Ofsted inspection and offers strong CPD and training opportunities, alongside flexible working arrangements.
You must be a qualified social worker registered with Social Work England and have substantial experience working with children and families. A passion for relationship-based practice, reflective thinking, and direct work with children is essential.
