Job Description

Gateshead Council is seeking a qualified Social Worker to join its award-winning Kinship Care Team on a locum basis, based at the Civic Centre, NE8 1HH. The rate is £27.56 per hour, with a start date of 27 July 2026.

This is a meaningful, permanence-focused role supporting children to achieve stability within their extended family or friendship networks. You will carry out Connected Persons Assessments, Regulation 24 assessments, foster carer reviews, and ongoing supervision of kinship carers, whilst contributing to high-quality support packages that keep families together.

Day-to-day responsibilities include completing complex assessments, chairing planning and strategy meetings, acting as Agency Advisor to the Kinship Care Fostering/Permanence Panel, preparing court reports, and managing safeguarding and risk within the team. You will work within statutory and legislative frameworks covering child protection and children in care.

Gateshead offers hybrid working, a co-located base alongside all social work teams, reflective supervision, a protected induction scheme, and strong career progression pathways including a Social Work Academy for NQSWs.

Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification, be registered with Social Work England, and have substantial experience in children’s statutory social work including child protection and looked-after children. A current driving licence and access to transport are required.
