Job Description
The London Borough of Lambeth is recruiting a Cessation of Duty Officer to join its newly established Cessation of Duty Team within the Housing Needs Directorate, based at Lambeth Town Hall, Brixton. This is a frontline housing role paying £23.73–£30.96 per hour via Prism, starting 27 July 2026.
This position sits at the heart of Lambeth’s ambitious transformation of its Housing Needs service, with a clear mission to reduce the number of residents in temporary accommodation by ensuring Part 7 housing duties are concluded lawfully, robustly and on time. You will hold a caseload of homelessness cases, working directly with applicants to reach lawful conclusions under the Housing Act 1996 and Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, preparing statutory notifications and making defensible decisions under the supervision of the Cessation of Duty Manager.
Key responsibilities include reviewing evidence and Personal Housing Plans (PHPs) to determine whether duties can be ended; delivering high-quality assessments and written decision-making under statute and case law; communicating decisions clearly and sensitively to residents; identifying safeguarding and vulnerability concerns and escalating promptly; and maintaining accurate, auditable records in preparation for reviews, legal challenges and complaints.
You will work closely with colleagues across Housing, Legal Services, Adult Social Care and Children’s Social Care, as well as external partners. The service operates a prevention-first, trauma-informed, resident-centred model underpinned by Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE) principles.
Ideal candidates will have demonstrable knowledge of housing legislation — particularly sections 188 and 193 of the Housing Act — experience managing a frontline homelessness caseload, strong communication skills and the ability to make legally sound, empathetic decisions.
