Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Team Manager to lead a frontline children’s social work team at Wirral Council, based in Birkenhead. This is a pivotal role with genuine impact on outcomes for children, young people, and their families across assessment, Child in Need, Child Protection, pre-proceedings, and care proceedings.
You will hold day-to-day management responsibility for a team of six to eight social workers, overseeing caseload allocation, quality of practice, and timely progression of work. Your responsibilities will include oversight of assessments, CP plans, CIN work, PLO, and court proceedings, with the confidence to make sound decisions and escalate appropriately. You will deliver regular, reflective supervision, challenge poor practice constructively, and support staff development — including mentoring aspiring and newly appointed Team Managers.
Working closely with Service Managers and partner agencies, you will champion good recording, timely visits, and child-centred decision-making. You will also contribute to case audits, performance monitoring, and service improvement initiatives.
Candidates must hold a recognised Social Work qualification (Degree in Social Work or Dip SW) and be registered with Social Work England. Extensive experience managing a team within statutory children’s services is essential, along with a strong grasp of relevant legislation and a demonstrable track record in performance management and complex casework.
This role pays between £34.86 and £45.00 per hour and is available from 25 May 2026. If you are a resilient, child-focused leader ready to drive high standards in a demanding frontline environment, we want to hear from you. Apply today.
