Job Description

Please be aware this is a Long Term Temporary post to start ASAP.

To work as part of an office based service wide homeless duty team and carry out assessments for homeless, potentially homeless households or people in housing need identifying barriers and support needs gathering relevant information and obtaining permission to enable homeless decisions to be made.

To undertake housing options assessments, Personal Housing Plans & deliver housing options advice and assistance to ensure the Council meets its statutory responsibilities to people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or in housing needs.

To make relevant third party enquiries and obtain information to help establish details of the case.  This could involve a variety of enquiries to private individuals, landlords, lenders and statutory and voluntary organisations.

To prevent or delay homelessness by negotiating with current and potential housing providers to allow the applicant to retain their existing accommodation or move to alternate accommodation.

To provide service users with a full appraisal of their situation providing realistic and assertive but sensitive advice taking into account individual needs and situations and to encourage them to consider all options available to them to obtain new accommodation or prevent losing their existing accommodation.

To manage service users face to face and on the telephone who are in housing crisis and may exhibit challenging behaviour requiring use of de-escalation methods to resolve conflict wherever possible

Knowledge Required:

Knowledge of homelessness legislation, guidance and good practice.

Good knowledge of homeless prevention techniques and strategies.

Good knowledge of housing options within the district for homeless and vulnerable people.

Thorough understanding of the housing and support needs of homeless and vulnerable people.

Good understanding of the districts Choice Based Lettings Scheme

Good knowledge of local social housing allocations policies

Knowledge of support and risk assessment techniques

Basic knowledge of welfare benefits

Knowledge of the social and financial costs of homelessness to individuals, the local authority and other relevant bodies.

Knowledge of Safeguarding adults and children.

Knowledge of equality and diversity.

Knowledge of data protection.

Experience Required:

Experience of assessing people’s needs with a focus on solution based outcomes

Experience of working with vulnerable clients

Experience of managing service users expectations and challenging behaviour.

Experience of working within policies and procedures and influencing change to new or existing practice by contributing to the development of new procedures

Experience in managing a caseload and keeping appropriate case notes and work based systems accurately updated.

You must have:

  • Post qualified experience.
  • Enhanced DBS/Update service.
  • References required for the last 5 years of employment.
