Job Description
Birmingham Children’s Trust is seeking an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to join their remote IRO Service, with a rate of £27.89–£37.99 per hour, starting 14 September 2026.
This is a critical role championing the rights, wishes and wellbeing of children and young people in care. You will provide independent oversight and professional challenge across the care planning process, ensuring Birmingham Children’s Trust fulfils its statutory and corporate parenting responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include chairing statutory Child in Care Reviews; ensuring care plans are child-centred, needs-led and promote timely permanence; monitoring compliance with recommendations and statutory requirements; identifying drift or delay and escalating concerns through formal dispute resolution processes; contributing to quality assurance through management reviews, case evaluations and thematic audits; and maintaining accurate, high-quality records on electronic case management systems.
You will be an active advocate for children, ensuring their views and lived experiences genuinely influence decision-making, and will build effective partnerships with social workers, managers and external agencies across the city.
Candidates must be qualified social workers registered with Social Work England and hold significant post-qualifying experience in children’s social care. Strong knowledge of legislation and statutory guidance relating to children in care is essential, alongside demonstrable experience of chairing complex multi-agency meetings and providing independent professional challenge.
