Job Description

North Tyneside Council is seeking an experienced Adults Social Worker to join its busy Mental Health Social Work Team, based at Quadrant East, Whitley Bay (NE27 0BY). This is a locum role paying £27.61 per hour, available from 17 August 2026.

You will hold a varied caseload of adults with mental health or substance use needs, delivering person-centred, strengths-based interventions that promote independence, wellbeing and safety. Key responsibilities include undertaking Care Act 2014 assessments, support planning and eligibility determinations; completing Mental Capacity Act 2005 assessments and best interest decisions; managing complex safeguarding enquiries; supporting Section 117 aftercare discharge planning; and responding to crisis situations with a trauma-informed, recovery-focused approach.

You will apply the Ways to Wellbeing Conversation model, work collaboratively with health partners and community organisations, and maintain accurate, legally compliant records. The role involves a mix of office, community and lone working, with travel across the borough required.

Essential: Social Work England registration, a recognised Social Work qualification, substantial adult mental health social work experience, sound knowledge of the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Mental Health Act 1983, and an enhanced DBS check.
