Job Description

Somerset Council is recruiting an Adults Social Worker to join its Learning Disabilities Reviewing Team, based in Taunton (TA1 4DY). This is a locum role paying £27.78–£38.00 per hour via Prism, starting 24 August 2026.

You will carry a caseload of varying complexity, undertaking assessments of risk and care needs, conducting statutory reviews, and developing care plans that promote independence and safeguard vulnerable adults. Day-to-day duties include receiving and responding to referrals, engaging with service users who may be in crisis or refusing a service, negotiating with carers and families, liaising with health, housing, police and voluntary agencies, and maintaining high-quality case records in line with relevant legislation and Somerset Council policy.

The role sits within a multi-disciplinary team and requires confident lone working in community settings. A vehicle and valid driving licence are essential.

Essential requirements: a recognised Social Work qualification (BA or MA in Social Work or equivalent) and current Social Work England registration. Experience working with adults with learning disabilities is highly desirable, as is supervisory experience and familiarity with Court of Protection processes.
