Job Description

Somerset Council is seeking an experienced Childrens Social Worker to cover a rare vacancy within the Children Looked After (CLA) Team based in Yeovil, South Somerset. This is a locum position paying £28.41–£38.00 per hour, available from 6 July 2026.

This is a well-established, settled team of 10 social workers that recently received an internal inspection rating of Good with several Outstanding areas. You will hold a mixed caseload of children aged 0–18 across varying levels of complexity, with children potentially living anywhere in the country — so significant travel is expected. Presence in the Yeovil office is required one day per week for the team meeting and four duty cover days per month.

Key responsibilities include building trusting, strengths-based and trauma-informed relationships with children and families; undertaking high-quality, child-centred assessments; completing care and pathway plans; contributing to TAC and PEP meetings; and producing clear court reports, adoption work, later life letters, and lifestory books.

Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification, be registered with Social Work England, and hold a full driving licence with access to their own vehicle. Experience in a multi-disciplinary LAC or similar children’s setting is essential.
