Job Description

Transform lives, champion rights, and support adults to achieve their full potential as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) with Somerset Council’s centralised AMHP service in Taunton.

You will join a 24/7 countywide AMHP hub, coordinating and undertaking Mental Health Act assessments across Somerset. Working alongside NHS mental health services, police, housing, and voluntary sector partners, you will uphold individuals’ legal rights and apply a social model approach to crisis response, promoting least-restrictive options and reducing unnecessary hospital admissions.

Key responsibilities include arranging and undertaking MHA assessments, acting as Single Point of Access on a rota basis, managing significant risk, arranging hospital admissions, and completing statutory documentation including tribunal reports, guardianship orders, and Community Treatment Orders. Outside standard hours, you will also support the wider Adults Social Care Out-of-Hours service.

Essential requirements: AMHP qualification, substantial mental health experience with recent AMHP practice, strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Human Rights Act, and Care Act, and full access to a vehicle for travel across Somerset. Full-time preferred; part-time hours considered. The rota includes weekends, nights, and bank holidays.
