Job Description

An experienced Senior Social Worker is required for a specialist maternity cover post within Manchester City Council’s Positive Pathways Team, based at Crescent Bank, Humphrey Street, Manchester (M8 9JS). Rate: £32 per hour. Fixed term: July 2026 – June 2027.

The Positive Pathways Team is a small, specialist Learning Disabilities service working with adults transitioning back into the community following detention under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act and/or complex prison releases. The team’s focus is preventing hospital readmission, reducing reoffending risk, and stabilising individuals post-discharge for up to 12 months. This is a forensic framework, high-risk caseload — not a standard Senior Social Worker role.

Key responsibilities include day-to-day supervision and oversight of Social Workers, deputising for the Operational Manager at strategic meetings (Dynamic Support Pathway, Assuring Transformation, Quality Assurance), chairing and attending MDT meetings, leading complex safeguarding enquiries, completing and quality-assuring complex mental capacity assessments, and supporting staff through court processes including Mental Health Tribunal and Hospital Managers Hearings, DoLS/DIDs applications, s21A challenges, and welfare applications.

Candidates must have demonstrable recent experience working with adults with Learning Disabilities in complex, high-risk casework, including supervising social workers under pressure, completing DIDs applications, IRMP risk assessments, and professional leadership within MDT settings.

This post is office-based a minimum of 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday, plus one further day) — this is non-negotiable. Three years of references and gaps in employment history will be checked. To apply, please contact us today.
