Childrens IRO – Independent Reviewing Officer – #5296044

Job Description

Durham County Council is seeking an experienced Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) on a temporary agency basis to support capacity within the team, based at Spennymoor Green Lane Council Offices, DL16 6JQ.

Paying £35.45 per hour, this is an initial 3-month post starting 18 May 2026.

Key responsibilities include chairing Children Looked After (CLA) reviews and Child Protection conferences, engaging meaningfully with children, young people, and their families, and monitoring the progress of children’s care plans. You will challenge effectively where drift or delay is identified, and work collaboratively with social work teams to ensure children are safe, supported, and achieving the best possible outcomes.

Previous experience as an IRO or Conference Chair is preferred. Candidates must hold a recognised social work qualification and be registered with Social Work England.
